Near the beginning of his career, Einstein thought that <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newtonian_mechanics" title="Newtonian mechanics">Newtonian mechanics</a> was no longer enough to reconcile the laws of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_mechanics" title="Classical mechanics">classical mechanics</a> with the laws of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_field" title="Electromagnetic field">electromagnetic field</a>. He realized, however, that the principle of relativity could also be extended to <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_fields" title="Gravitational fields">gravitational fields</a>,
 and with his subsequent theory of gravitation in 1916, he published a 
paper on the general theory of relativity. He continued to deal with 
problems of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistical_mechanics" title="Statistical mechanics">statistical mechanics</a> and quantum theory, which led to his explanations of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Particle" title="Particle">particle theory</a> and the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownian_motion" title="Brownian motion">motion of molecules</a>. He also investigated the thermal properties of light which laid the foundation of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photon" title="Photon">photon</a> theory of light. <b>Angkor Wat</b> (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khmer_language" title="Khmer language">Khmer</a>: <span lang="km">អង្គរវត្ត</span>) was first a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu" title="Hindu">Hindu</a>, then subsequently a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism" title="Buddhism">Buddhist</a>, temple complex in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambodia" title="Cambodia">Cambodia</a> and the largest religious monument in the world. The temple was built by the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khmer_people" title="Khmer people">Khmer</a> King <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suryavarman_II" title="Suryavarman II">Suryavarman II</a> in the early 12th century in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ya%C5%9Bodharapura" title="Yaśodharapura">Yaśodharapura</a> (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khmer_language" title="Khmer language">Khmer</a>: <span lang="km">យសោធរបុរៈ</span>, present-day <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angkor" title="Angkor">Angkor</a>), the capital of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khmer_Empire" title="Khmer Empire">Khmer Empire</a>, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Breaking from the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaivism" title="Shaivism">Shaiva</a> tradition of previous kings, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu" title="Vishnu">Vishnu</a>.
 As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have 
remained a significant religious center since its foundation. The temple
 is at the top of the high classical style of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khmer_architecture" title="Khmer architecture">Khmer architecture</a>. It has become a symbol of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambodia" title="Cambodia">Cambodia</a>,<sup class="reference" id="cite_ref-1"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angkor_Wat#cite_note-1">[1]</a></sup> appearing on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Cambodia" title="Flag of Cambodia">its national flag</a>, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.<br>
Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khmer_architecture#Temple_mountain" title="Khmer architecture">temple-mountain</a> and the later <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khmer_architecture#Gallery" title="Khmer architecture">galleried temple</a>, based on early <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dravidian_architecture" title="Dravidian architecture">Dravidian architecture</a>, with key features such as the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagati_%28temple%29" title="Jagati (temple)">Jagati</a>. It is designed to represent <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Meru" title="Mount Meru">Mount Meru</a>, home of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deva_%28Hinduism%29" title="Deva (Hinduism)">devas</a> in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_mythology" title="Hindu mythology">Hindu mythology</a>: within a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moat" title="Moat">moat</a>
 and an outer wall 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) long are three rectangular 
galleries, each raised above the next. At the centre of the temple 
stands a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quincunx" title="Quincunx">quincunx</a>
 of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the
 west; scholars are divided as to the significance of this. The temple 
is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its 
extensive <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relief#Bas-relief_or_low_relief" title="Relief">bas-reliefs</a>, and for the numerous <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khmer_architecture#Apsara_and_devata" title="Khmer architecture">devatas</a> adorning its walls.<br>

Newton also made seminal contributions to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optics" title="Optics">optics</a> and shares credit with <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gottfried_Leibniz" title="Gottfried Leibniz">Gottfried Leibniz</a> for the invention of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calculus" title="Calculus">calculus</a>.<br>
Newton's <i>Principia</i> formulated the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%27s_laws_of_motion" title="Newton's laws of motion">laws of motion</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%27s_law_of_universal_gravitation" title="Newton's law of universal gravitation">universal gravitation</a>, which dominated scientists' view of the physical universe for the next three centuries. By deriving <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Kepler" title="Johannes Kepler">Kepler's</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kepler%27s_laws_of_planetary_motion" title="Kepler's laws of planetary motion">laws of planetary motion</a> from his mathematical description of gravity, and then using the same principles to account for the trajectories of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet" title="Comet">comets</a>, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tide" title="Tide">tides</a>, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axial_precession" title="Axial precession">precession of the equinoxes</a>, and other phenomena, Newton removed the last doubts about the validity of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heliocentrism" title="Heliocentrism">heliocentric</a> model of the cosmos. This work also demonstrated that the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamics_%28mechanics%29" title="Dynamics (mechanics)">motion of objects</a> on Earth and of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celestial_mechanics" title="Celestial mechanics">celestial</a> bodies could be described by the same principles. In addition to his work on calculus, as a mathematician Newton contributed to the study of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_series" title="Power series">power series</a>, generalised the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial_theorem" title="Binomial theorem">binomial theorem</a> to non-integer exponents, and developed <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%27s_method" title="Newton's method">Newton's method</a> for approximating the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero_of_a_function" title="Zero of a function">roots of a function</a>.<br>
Newton was a fellow of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_College,_Cambridge" title="Trinity College, Cambridge">Trinity College</a> and the second <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucasian_Professor_of_Mathematics" title="Lucasian Professor of Mathematics">Lucasian Professor of Mathematics</a> at the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Cambridge" title="University of Cambridge">University of Cambridge</a>. He was a devout but unorthodox Christian and, unusually for a member of the Cambridge faculty of the day, he refused to take <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_orders" title="Holy orders">holy orders</a> in the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_England" title="Church of England">Church of England</a>, perhaps because he privately rejected the doctrine of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity" title="Trinity">Trinity</a>. Beyond his work on the mathematical sciences, Newton dedicated much of his time to the study of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronology_of_the_Bible" title="Chronology of the Bible">biblical chronology</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alchemy" title="Alchemy">alchemy</a>,
 but most of his work in those areas remained unpublished until long 
after his death. In his later life, Newton became president of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Society" title="Royal Society">Royal Society</a>. He also served the British government as Warden and Master of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Mint" title="Royal Mint">Royal Mint</a>.<br>
